Recap: AI in the Public Interest Demo Night

On the evening of Tuesday, September 29, OpenOakland hosted AI in the Public Interest: Oakland Civic Projects in Action at Oakland City Hall as part of Oakland Tech Week. It capped off a full day that began with our Beautiful Oakland Idea-A-Thon.
We heard from 3 phenomenal speakers about how they’re using AI to better illustrate civic data, including some of the limitations they’ve discovered. After the demos, many attendees stayed to give the project teams feedback and share their own expertise!
Projects we shared
- Open Disclosure is a dashboard that helps Oaklanders understand the role of money in local politics by turning campaign finance filings into an easy-to-read overview of who is raising money, from where, and how much. We built it in partnership with the City of Oakland Public Ethics Commission and it has served Oakland residents since 2014.
- EVOAK! is gathering West Oakland community asset data as part of Caltrans’ Vision 980 effort to reimagine the I-980 corridor. The goal is to make community data useful for developers, City of Oakland staff, service providers, and policymakers.
- Metrograph.ai is a dashboard for city data analytics, making it easier to explore and understand data about Oakland and other cities.
